A: Symptoms include: after updating the PC's GPU driver (such as an NVIDIA driver), a previously working Dream Air suddenly exhibits the following:

  1. Pimax Play shows "headset not connected," while the physical connection is intact but the software cannot handshake.

  2. The device indicator is abnormal, and the headset is in Screen Off or flashing state.

  3. The PC occasionally freezes, hangs, or becomes unresponsive for a moment when launching Pimax Play.

Possible causes

  • Audio and GPU display channel conflict: When the GPU driver is updated, the bundled GPU HD Audio driver conflicts with and locks the Pimax USB audio channel.

  • Unstable or blocked physical connection: During driver reload, the physical interface (USB/DP) handshake hangs and requires reinitialization of physical power.

  • Client service hang: The underlying Pimax Play service fails to automatically update its cache when the driver undergoes a major version change, causing handshake failure.

Troubleshooting steps

Step 1: Reconnect physical interfaces and use native ports

  1. Fully disconnect: Unplug all USB data cables, the DP video cable, and the power cable connecting the headset to the PC.

  2. Let it initialize: Wait about 30 seconds to ensure the headset's internal chip is fully powered off and its cache is cleared.

  3. Connect to a native rear USB 3.0 port: Reconnect the USB cable to a native USB 3.0 or higher port on the rear of the motherboard.

    1. Note: Never connect to a front-panel port, a third-party USB extension cable, or a hub without independent power, to avoid driver loading hangs caused by insufficient power or signal bandwidth.

  4. Replug the cables firmly: Make sure the cables are firmly plugged in with no looseness.

Step 2: Clear residual cache and reinstall the client

  1. Fully exit the Pimax Play client, and end all underlying processes starting with Pi or Pimax in Windows Task Manager.

  2. Press Win + R to open the Run window, type %appdata%, and press Enter.

  3. In the folder that opens, find and completely delete the Pimax cache folder.

  4. Download the latest version of Pimax Play from the official website and perform an overwrite installation to reinitialize the underlying service components.

Step 3: Clean GPU driver reinstallation (DDU method)

If the headset is still not recognized after physical replugging and reinstalling the client:

  1. Download the GPU driver uninstall tool DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).

  2. In Windows Safe Mode, run DDU to completely remove the current GPU driver and residual audio driver.

  3. After restarting the PC, go to the GPU manufacturer's official website, download and perform a "Clean Install" of the recommended official stable GPU driver (such as 591.86 or the latest WHQL stable version).
